The intstallation doesn’t distort pennies, but uses them in their natural state, taking advantage of characteristics to generate a new environment. By not distorting the pennies, they will be able to be repackaged and sent back to the bank for reimbursement of the project. The installation consists of 57,136 pennies laid out in a rotating pattern, revealing only the “head” side, creating a whole new field for the audience to interact with: a walkable surface. The rotation will be a 180 degree turn from one end to the other, creating a sense of movement on a static grid. This enables one to experience the project at various scales and perspectives. The pennies will be polished not only to give them a uniform appearance, but to emphasize west sunlight coming from the existing curtain wall, taking advantage of the potential reflective surface. The polish is also used in hopes of allowing time to produce a gradiant amongst the surface. This produces both a physically interactive and visually stimulating environment.
